Our firm was engaged to transform the existing library at Saunders Secondary School into a new Library Learning Commons as a pilot project for the Thames Valley District School Board.
The space was designed as a central student activity hub for the school. Previously a standard library with several classrooms and offices, the space was transformed into a large open library and learning space with adjacent meeting and
presentation rooms, as well as maker and creative spaces.
The project includes the addition of three glazed walls at the perimeter of the Learning Commons, to provide visual connection and transparency. The existing concrete waffle slab ceiling was exposed to allow for increased ceiling height and to emphasize the grandeur of the space. Movable furniture was incorporated to allow reconfiguration for optimal flexibility and usage. Collaboration tools such as whiteboards, accessible power sources, and wireless capabilities were also incorporated.
